Introverts are often referred to as shy, unfriendly and anti-social. But the truth is introverts just enjoy spending time alone to think and explore their feelings and experiences. Most often, parents who have introverted children experience difficulty in dealing with them, because introverts are not fond of attending parties or participating in class recitations.

As parents, you want your kids to socialize with people to gain friends. But you also have to understand the unique characteristics of introverts to be able to know them better. Here are tips that can help you in raising an introverted child.                      

• Don’t try to change your child. You might think of changing your child just to meet the norms of the society. But doing so will only make your child feel that he is different in a bad way. There is nothing wrong with being an introvert so never punish your child for being one.

• Respect your child’s social preferences. Telling them to relate with people the way you do will not help. Let your child be comfortable the way he is. Introverts often have a few friends, because they feel drained when they are surrounded by many people.

• Research on the activities where they can excel. Introverts do not like working in groups, so it would be best to give them activities where they can freely express themselves. Activities like writing, photography, reading and decorating can help introverts to excel. Try flyer printing and poster printing for your introverted child’s artworks. You can display your child’s artwork in his room so he can always see the products of his creativity.

• Understand their unique personality. Erase all your negative perceptions about introverts, because they have wonderful layers to their personality that you can discover. Try communicating with your introverted child on a daily basis, so you will learn more about his unique trait.
